Jeremy Strong transforms into Mark Zuckerberg in 'The Social Reckoning'
Jeremy Strong is wired in for his latest role. Sony has revealed the first look at the 'Succession' star playing Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg in 'The Social Reckoning,' Aaron Sorkin's follow-up to the Oscar-winning 2010 movie 'The Social Network.' Strong takes over the role of Zuckerberg from Jesse Eisenberg. The tense first trailer for the movie released on June 10 sees Strong show off his impressive Zuckerberg impersonation, as the Facebook founder is seen preparing to deliver congressional testimony. A character played by Bill Burr confronts Zuckerberg in the footage for injecting a 'firehose of bad information' into the air supply, to which the Facebook boss defends himself as a 'free-speech absolutist.' Much of the footage, though, centers on Jeremy Allen White as Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz and his dramatic efforts to expose damaging information about Facebook. He is seen meeting with Frances Haugen, a whistleblower played by Oscar-winning 'Anora' star Mikey Madison. 'The Social Reckoning' is described as a 'companion piece' to 'The Social Network' rather than a direct sequel, although the trailer ends with the iconic musical score from the original movie, which was composed by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. Alexandre Desplat succeeded Reznor and Ross as composer of the new film. David Fincher directed 'The Social Network,' which focused on the invention of Facebook, from a screenplay by Sorkin, but Fincher did not return to direct the follow-up. For 'The Social Reckoning,' Sorkin is handling both writing and directing duties, in his first directorial effort since 2021's 'Being the Ricardos.' Sorkin won the Oscar for best adapted screenplay for the original movie. 'A companion piece to the hit film 'The Social Network,' Sorkin's original screenplay is based on the events that gave rise to the Wall Street Journal’s shocking exposé The Facebook Files,' the plot synopsis reads. 'The film is inspired by the true story of how Frances Haugen (Madison), a young Facebook engineer, enlists the help of Jeff Horwitz (White), a Wall Street Journal reporter, to go on a dangerous journey that ends up blowing the whistle on the social network's most guarded secrets.' In 2025, Strong told USA TODAY he prepared to play Zuckerberg by watching 'everything he's ever said and done.' 'I take it as an enormous responsibility,' Strong added. 'He's a very important person in our world, and the film touches on essential issues and third-rail issues of our time.' 'The Social Reckoning' cast 'The Social Reckoning' stars Mikey Madison, Jeremy Allen White, Jeremy Strong, Wunmi Mosaku, Betty Gilpin, Billy Magnussen and Bill Burr. 'The Social Reckoning' release date 'The Social Reckoning' hits theaters on Oct. 9.
